Why Digital Marketing Can’t Replace A Real Sales Team
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
You can post every day, run Google Ads, perfect your Google Business Profile, and still wonder why revenue feels stuck. The missing piece usually isn’t another platform or another funnel, it’s sales. We talk through a hard truth for small business owners and service providers: digital marketing creates interest, but it doesn’t replace the face-to-face trust that closes deals.
We dig into how social media marketing used to feel effortless when Facebook and Instagram delivered massive organic reach, then shifted as algorithms and regulation changed the game. Consistent content and smart paid ads still matter, but they work best when they support a real sales process. I share a client story from a niche product where we tried everything: social posts, AI marketing, Meta ads, Google ads, email campaigns, and broader outreach. The result was clear: none of it replaced the need to network, show up, and sell.
We also get practical about what happens after you meet someone. If you’re collecting business cards, sending proposals, or booking calls, your follow-up system is the difference between “interested” and “signed.” I explain the follow-up mindset I use, how to back your sales team with digital credibility like reviews and a solid website, and why owners often still need to be visible in the community.
If you found this helpful, subscribe, share it with a friend who’s trying to grow without a big budget, and leave a review so more business owners can find it. What part of your sales process needs the most tightening right now?

SPEAKER_00Hey guys, welcome back to the podcast. Thank you so much for tuning in to another episode. You already know that I love doing these for you, sharing my insights, my skills, things that I've learned over the last 14 years of marketing. You guys are getting it for free. So share it with your friends. If this is something that resonates with you, it's going to resonate with them too. A lot of people just don't have the time or the money or budget to hire a marketing agency. So if you're doing it on your own, this podcast is a great resource for that. Today we're going to talk about digital marketing is not replacing your sales team. I know, I know. It would be amazing if we can make one post on Facebook and make a million dollars, right? If you've read my book, I actually talk about that a lot. So you should, if you haven't read it, you should totally read it. Um, but we used to back in the day when we had Facebook and Instagram for business for the first time, we would have so much engagement. I would do one post for my company and I would get probably a hundred comments. I'd get 200 people that liked it. People would share it, I would get more followers. It was insane. But then more people started figuring out that Meta is a free way to do marketing for your business and being able to share content. So then the algorithm started coming into play, then the government started to come into play. So now Facebook is just really highly regulated, but we can tap into it really easily by being consistent with our content. So we have digital marketing in one of our little feat of marketing, right? So you have digital marketing, you have hard copy marketing, you have networking, you have your website if you're doing ads, but none of those are going to replace your sales team. I've recently had this discussion with a client because he has such a niche product that we've done everything we possibly could on digital marketing. We've done social media posts, I've done AI marketing, we've done ads on Google, we've done ads on uh Meta, we've done email campaigns, we've even sent like purchased an email list so that way we could have even more people to send those to. But what it never replaced for him was a sales team. As much as I wish all of those efforts were gonna bring in the amount of money that he needed, bring in the amount of clients that he needed, he still needs to do the sales part. And that's really kind of where the bridge that we are now crossing is having to be crossed because he's learning that he's having to be in person, he's having to set up out events, he's having to have that face-to-face. Maybe because his is so niche down, but also it's never gonna go away. If you have a successful business, you still need to network, you still need to get out in the public, you still need to set up out events so that way people know who you are. Where I am in my business, I'm still showing up. I have leads groups, I've got networking events, I'm showing up to speak at different places because my face is very important to get out there. Now I have an amazing team and they do the same thing. They'll get out in their own capacity, they're getting their networking on like networking team together, they're getting their network on so that way they can meet different people than what I have met. But ultimately, as the owner of the business, I still have to get out there and show my face. Just because they're out here selling and they're also um being able to network on my behalf, people still want to see me and meet me and know that I am behind them, supporting them all the way through whenever they're doing stuff for their um for their content and their business as well. So if you're in this like turmoil of, you know, I'm doing everything digitally, Shelby. I've got my Google Business profile up there, I'm doing ads, I'm doing all these things. You still have to have a really strong sales approach. And ultimately, if you get those network, if you get the business cards, if you sent them the proposals, what does that follow-up look like? There is a podcast on here, it's called my three follow-up rule. You can go and listen to that as well. It is something that I find very important in my business. I like to follow up three times and then I'm like, you know what? They'll probably ghost you, or they will say, well, it's not in my budget, or something like that. But at least you've given them those three chances and you've you've done your diligence on your side. So when you do go network and you're outside of this digital marketing realm, I want you to make sure that your follow-up game is good. You have email campaigns going out, um, you've got things that maybe you're calling on people, depending on what your services are that you are offering them. Make sure that you have your sales team, you've got the training in place, and you also are backing that with digital marketing. So your sales team are in front of people, and then whenever they hear about you, they connect with you. They can go on your Facebook, they can go on your website, your Google business, they read reviews, and that's how your digital marketing is going to be effective because those people have heard about you and now they're like, oh, these people are legit. But if you need any help with any of these, we have resources. I've got the boss marketing club. Um, we have a boss marketing boot camp coming up. I've got my book, Market Like a Boss. Pretty much if you Google boss with marketing, you'll find things from the marketing broker. And um I would love to connect you with those free resources. So if you ever need anything from me, if you want a free consultation, let's chat about what your marketing efforts are now that I can definitely help you out with that. All right, I'll catch you on the next one.
